Texas Motorcycle Requirements

Almost all states require some form of motorcycle insurance or safety, but each state you cross through will have their laws for safety equipment requirements.

Texas motorcycle laws can be found in the “Texas Department of Safety Motorcycle Operator’s Manual,” which was written by the Motorcycle Safety Unit.

According to Texas Law:

  • Motorcycle Helmet Use Law - Required by law under age 21
  • Motorcycle Eye Protection Law - Not required
  • Motorcycle Noise Restrictions Law – Not required
  • Motorcycle Passenger Law - Passengers under the age of five are not permitted to ride on a motorcycle unless in an attached sidecar
  • Motorcycle Daytime Headlight Law - Required for vehicles manufactured during or after 1975
  • Motorcycle Lane Splitting Laws - No mention of lane splitting and therefore not prohibited

You must know the motorcycle laws in each state you operate your motorcycle. Lane splitting is somewhat controversial because it permits a motorcycle to drive between two vehicles. Lane splitting naturally is dangerous and may lead to road rage.

Minimum Insurance Requirements for Texas

Texas requires the minimum insurance coverage of $60,000 for physical injury, $25,000 for property damage, $30,000 for personal injury protection (PIP).

Types of Coverage Available

As stated, the law requires minimum liability coverage. But both comprehensive and collision insurance should be seriously considered because Texas is a "fault" insurance state which means that if you are found at fault, you would be responsible for paying for any personal injury and medical expenses including physical damages to the other person's motorcycle or car. The liability coverage will not cover damages to your bike from an accident or incident.
